*** BEWARE OF SCAMMERS ***

Since the early 1980's there has been a scam where the seller receives a fax, email, or letter requesting to purchase an item (this scam is not restricted to horses). The "buyer" usually offers to pay the seller, via Cashiers Check or Wire Transfer, the cost of the item plus a significant amount of money OVER the amount of the item. They then request that you "cash" the payment and send them, or a 3rd party person/company, the rest of the money right away. Also, they usually say that you, the seller, can keep a portion of the extra money for your time and trouble.

Most of these scammers are from foreign countries and are very difficult to track down.

In the email version of this scam, the initial email from the "buyer" most often reads like a poorly constructed form letter where the info about the horse/item is pasted into the appropriate places.  Examples of scam emails

FIVE RULES FOR DOING BUSINESS
  1. NEVER pay anything up front for ANY reason
  2. NEVER extend credit for ANY reason
  3. NEVER do ANYTHING until their check clears
  4. NEVER expect ANY help from the Foreign Country's Government
  5. NEVER rely on YOUR Government to bail you out
If you are concerned about a money transaction, we recommend that you contact your bank for their advise on secure forms of payment.
